HANDICAPPING POSITIONS 2026/2027
Applications are sought as a priority from individuals interested in joining the SAAL handicapping panel for the 2026/27 season. Following the recent retirements of valued handicappers, Damian Tohl and Kevin McAneney, whilst we have some back up plans in place, there is an immediate need to bring new people onto the panel. Training and mentoring will be provided.
The role involves handicapping all events within an assigned portfolio across up to 15 carnivals between October and March, making early appointments important for planning, training, and continuity.
THE ROLE
SAAL provides a sophisticated handicapping system, giving panel members access to detailed data sets, individual MPS rates for athletes, and predicted times based on past performances.
Your role will be to use this system, the SAAL handicapping guidelines, and your judgement to allocate handicaps for all meets within your portfolio. You will be supported with training, guidance, and mentoring.
SAAL would prefer applications from individuals with no conflict of interest. Where this is not possible, candidates may still be considered and placed in portfolios where no or minimal conflict exists. Visible governance structures will be put in place to ensure fairness, equity, and confidence in the process.
A stipend is available for the position.
If you are interested, please contact us as soon as possible, and no later than 14/07/2026, so appointments, training, and season planning can be finalised without delay.
